A Week of Prayer Shapes a Church |

The year was 1981. It was a Tuesday morning during my first year in the pastoral ministry at Rexdale Alliance church. (I had come out of an 11-year career with Atomic energy of Canada). The mail for that day included a reminder to participate in our denomination’s annual world week of prayer. During the week our entire denomination, represented by missionaries and national churches in 50+ countries around the world, would pray at the same time and for largely the same needs, majoring on issues related to the global advance of the kingdom of Christ.

Getting people ready to participate in a week of prayer is critical. I begin by focusing the last sermon of the old year and the first sermon of the new year on the subject of prayer. Repentance and other related items can serve as a serious call to participation. But encouragement can be a powerful motivator as well.

Because it is such an important area for prayer, we recommend focusing on your pastors in some way during the week of prayer. Or with October being pastor appreciation month, way not adapt this plan for the month.

One of the biggest hindrances to people coming out to corporate prayer times is fear. What will I have to pray? What if I don’t know what to say? Stress over those issues alone will keep people away.
