Uncommon Prayer Meetings
Turning Prayer Meetings into Adventures
Focus: Praying for the Next Generation
Foundation: 1 Samuel 3:1-21; 1 Samuel 16:1-13; Acts 13:1-13, 15:36-41; 2 Timothy 4:11
Too many of our children and youth walk away from both the Church and Christ as they move into a secular adult world. Invest an evening in their spiritual future. Invite parents and grandparents. Ask the kids and young people for prayer requests; as specific and honest as they dare to be!
Format:
Facilitator explains the focus and guidelines (launch your prayer from a scripture in the identified section)
Praise: sing 1 or 2 song-prayers; songs with lyrics that speak to God, extolling His greatness, grandeur and glory.
Scripture Foundation: 1 Samuel 3:1-21
Facilitator skims the passage to briefly explain the situation
Emphasize: “I did not call you” indicates the slowness of older generation to consider the next generation as colleagues
“Let’s ask God to forgive us for not discipling, mentoring, training
our young people; for not having a vision for their future in ministry.”
Sing a song with the theme of looking at the heart
Scripture Foundation: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Facilitator skims the passage to briefly explain the situation
Emphasize: “The Lord looks on the heart” indicates that when we look for leaders we often use a secular or corporate standard
“Let’s pray from this passage, asking the Lord to help us discern David’s (male and female) currently hidden from our eyes.”
Scripture Foundation: Acts 13:1-13 + 15: 36-41 + 2 Timothy 4:11
Facilitator skims the passage to briefly explain the situation
Emphasize: “John Mark was with Paul and Barnabas
(13:4) but left them (13) (due to spiritual conflict in Paphos?),
leading to a parting of the ways (37-39) . . . But, Barnabas sacrificed
the “limelight” and mentored John Mark, eventually resulting in Paul’s
request for his help (2 Timothy 4:11).
“Let’s pray for those who have failed, drawn back, even deserted; for their restoration, for a mentor, for renewed opportunity.”
