PRAYER FOR YOUR CHURCH

Lord, I lift up the adults in my congregation to You. May we live worthy of Your call on our lives. As we respond to that call, fulfill every purpose, every faith-filled act of service by Your power. May we be clothed in righteousness with hearts that sing for joy and delight greatly in You. We want to walk with You, Jesus, dressed in white, adorned with jewels. Although there is not a lot of information in print on the topic of solemn assemblies, Richard Owen Roberts has a 16-page pamphlet, “The Solemn Assembly,” available for $1.00 at http://www.rorbooks.com/home/home003.htm. Roberts lays a biblical background of revival movements in the Old Testament that were precipitated by a call for repentance of the people through solemn assembly. Some of the passages he highlights include:

  • 1 Samuel 7: 5, 6 – Samuel requires all of Israel to gather at Mizpah in solemn assembly.
  • 2 Chronicles 15:9-15 – Asa calls a solemn assembly in Jerusalem to bring reform.
  • 2 Chronicles 20:3-13ff – Jehoshaphat calls for a solemn assembly throughout Judah and Jerusalem during a desperate time.
  • 2 Chronicles 23:16 – Jehoiada makes a covenant to follow Jehovah during a solemn assembly.
  • 2 Chronicles 29:5ff – Hezekiah gathers the people for solemn assembly before celebrating Passover.
  • 2 Chronicles 34:29-33 – Josiah gathers the people for solemn assembly to return to God’s word.
  • Ezra 6:16-22 – The priests and Levites lead the people in a solemn assembly to separate them from practices of pagan nations.
  • Ezra 8:21-23; 9:1-15 – Ezra and the people put away sin in a solemn assembly.
  • Joel 1:14; 2:12-17 – Joel requires the people to return to the Lord with fasting, weeping and a “rending of hearts.”

The pamphlet also gives a historical glimpse of the use of solemn assembly in church history as well as practical suggestions for its use today.
