Q/R - Question & Reply
Q - Dear Phil, Recently God has impressed upon my heart the need to call His people together across denominations in our community to reach the city for Christ. I wanted to ask you to please pray that God will give me the wisdom to facilitate this meeting. I am simply a lay leader in the community with a burden for improved unity and for prayer driven evangelism. I have attended your prayer conferences held in our city in the past and have really been blessed by your wisdom in facilitating Holy Spirit led prayer times. I have facilitated prayer times many times before, but never anything of this nature.
Could you give me an example of what you might suggest for the first meeting. I really want to keep it as simple as possible. Most of the pastors of the community are very supportive of this and are planning to be there. Do you recommend the separation into groups of 3-4 people at the first meeting?
I would really appreciate your input and prayer for our community to be united around the truth of Jesus Christ for His purposes.
Thank you, Lori
Reply - Good to hear from you Lori; and very glad to hear about this citywide prayer meeting.
Here are a few suggestions, but be sure to look over the members section at prayerleader.com:
- Appoint one person to facilitate
- Involve as many pastors as possible
- Use a good worship leader or team (if possible, not from the host church)
- Include youth
- Consider offering child care
Here is a format (using the acronym P.R.A.Y.) to consider:
P. Praise Welcome (this could be the host pastor) Have participants stand and greet one another (get them involved). Songs of praise (words directed to God) Scripture reading (responsive reading to involve congregation) Songs of praise (words directed to God) Prayer: pastor #1 – Prayers a prayer of praise ... followed by congregational prayers of praise (no petition)
R. Repent Song (repentance theme) Scripture reading (on confession of sin) Song of repentance Prayer: pastor #2 – Leads a prayer of repentance ... followed by personal silent confession (open altar area) Song (grace; forgiveness, thanks for salvation and cleansing)
A. Ask Pastor #3 – Bring a brief (5-10 min) devotional on the power of corporate prayer Song (petition; intercession) Small Group prayers (3-5 min for each topic): Suggested topics: Seekers: people in our community searching for truth, hope, God. Strategic leaders and systems in civic life and the business community. Send us: Use the Church to serve the needs of the community (poverty, gangs, schools, family/marriage . . .).
Y. Yield Song (yes to God; surrender, obedience) Prayer:
pastor #4 – declare our intention to serve and sacrifice for God’s
Kingdom . . . together . . . followed by small group prayers for: Unity among Pastors and Congregations Opportunity to serve the community Victory for the gospel Song (send us; step forward . . .)
Hope this helps, Phil
