PRAYER FOR YOUR CHURCH

Prayer Focus

Lord, I lift up the prayer focus in my church. Make us into a house of prayer. We desire to be clear-minded and self-controlled so that we can pray first, always, continually and thankfully. May everyone recognize that this is Your desire for all and not just a few. Use us to stand in the gap for others. Let there be prayer ministry among us that is powerful and effective. (Mk. 11:17; 1 Pet. 4:7; 1 Tim. 2:1; Eph. 6:18; 1 Thes. 5:17; Phil. 4:6; Ps. 32:6; Ezk. 22:30; Jas. 5:16)

Using a Special Event to Mobilize Prayer

I was struck by an email that came to me asking to join people in praying around the Oscars.

Does Your community have an event that is popular? Then why not find a way to rally prayer around it? Most communities do not have an event as well known as the Oscars but most have holiday parades, theater premiers, school events, city council meetings, sports activities, educational lectures. Your local newspaper coverage is your best source of ideas (as you pray for guidance from the Spirit, of course).
  1. Include your pastor in on this decision before you go public.
  2. Identify an event or activity that is well known throughout your area.
  3. Incorporate the leaders of classes and committees, ministries and activities; ask them to participate and promote the event.
  4. Invite the entire congregation, including families with young children.
  5. Inspire members by casting vision to touch and transform their community through prayer.
  6. Instruct those attending with a brief orientation before moving to pray on location.
  7. Intercede for the event in a non-offensive, unnoticed manner
  8. Interact when you return: How did God lead us? What did the Spirit focus on prayers upon? What impacted you the most?
  9. Inform (announcement or newsletter) the church of the results as a way to generate interest for your next prayer event.
